Color is by definition very different. People will perceive color is contradictory ways, and there is no ready explanation for it.
A response we have to this information is given to us by Maggie Macnab. The idea is that we should imitate the sensuality of nature, and work to reflect its presence. Sudden trends have no bearing, but long term ones are often directly tied to the natural world.
The goal is to make the user, the reader, experience the same design that you yourself made. Of course that is the real trick, because while you may have the perfect design in mind the end result may look to the consumer much different.
So we have that problem and we then have the solution which Macnab gives us, that when in doubt parallel nature. I personally approve of this, and find that the color schemes we see everyday are those we are most comfortable looking at.
