Selection Assignment 2

Designing this piece was enjoyable because I was able to take an old childhood passion and turn it into something new. Originally this quote and the figure you see falling all began in a video game. MYST, as it was called, took place in an alternative universe where the main character falls through a "star fissure." This was my favorite game when I was a child.

The quote is taken directly from the beginning. The game opens up with you falling in a 2D world (circa 1995.) You are this figure:

I then took this picture:

and this one:

and subtlety blended them together. I liked the idea of the background moon because it filled up the black space left in the orginal picture. It also gave a sense of scale.

I wanted the figure to be falling into a black hole. I wanted to duel represent this by taking an eye and forming it into the event horizon.

I used this stock image:

and made it to look like a chasm. Difficult to explain to those who have not played the game, but it has a large meaning to those who have.

I then took the nebula clouds and warped them around the eye to make it appear more like a black hole. Although this is not congruent with physics and quantum theory it gives an interesting effect.

I then took three copies of the same figure to show a sense of continued motion along the timeline. I wanted it to appear as though he was falling, rather than getting sucked in. I feel I accomplished this.

The completed image captures many aspects of the original game, since this was an ode to it. I am pleased with the outcome.
